Potters Force Game 3 With 10-7 Win Over Heat

2017.08.09

If you expected nothing other than a riveting battle from the Heat-Potters matchup in the first round of the GWL postseason, you can officially take your prediction to the bank as the squads are knotted up at one game each in the best-of-three series. After the Heat outlasted Lincoln in extra innings to claim game one, the series shifted to Chico’s Nettleton Stadium where the home squad looked to close out the series.

However, the Potters employed consistent offensive production among solid early pitching to fend off the Heat, 10-7.

Lincoln drew first blood in the top of the first after a leadoff double proved costly for Chico starter Jack Ralston when the run scored just two hitters later. Ralston was able to quell the Potters in the second before the visitors added two runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

The Heat offense was virtually silent throughout the first four innings of the contest as they stranded a total of three runners on base. Luckily, the home squad finally awakened in the bottom of the fifth to begin to chip away at Lincoln’s then 6-0 lead.

Eric Robles drew a walk from Lincoln starter Josh Cooper to kick off the two-out rally. A single from Tanner Tokunaga put two runners on for Cole Lemmel, who delivered an RBI single to bring in Robles. Consecutive singles from Gavin Johns and Marcus Wilhite scored two additional Heat runs to cut Lincoln’s lead in half, 6-3.

As the scorebooks will show, Chico’s offensive surge, which added an additional four runs throughout the contest, was not enough to overcome the obstacles presented by Lincoln’s consistent offense. The Potters added one run in the sixth and three in the seventh before Chico’s Tanner Clark held them scoreless through the eighth and ninth innings.

Despite closing in on Lincoln 10-6 a late, ninth inning rally for Chico fell short, as the early deficit proved too much for the home team to overcome in front of a crowd of 1,254 Chico faithful.

After a season chock-full of outstanding moments between Chico and Lincoln, one team’s season will come to a close Wednesday as the Heat and Potters play a winner-take-all game at the Nett with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
