Offensive Sparks Fly in Heat’s 14-9 Victory over Yuba City

2017.07.30

On a night honoring America’s military heroes, the Heat offense sprung to life while crooked numbers and clean defense propelled the squad to a significant victory before treating fans to the final fireworks display of the season. The three-hour and eighteen-minute contest saw a total of 23 runs scored on 25 hits between the Heat and visiting Yuba City Bears.

Mikey Wright took the hill for the Heat while Austin Southward toed the rubber for Yuba City in what appeared to be a pitcher’s evening early on. The two hurlers held the game scoreless through the top of the third, but the Heat bats quickly combined for a dominant seven-run bottom of the third to break open the quiet night.

As part of the third-inning display, the Heat saw two extra-base hits with RBIs credited to Tanner Tokunaga, Caleb Van Blake, Carson McCusker, Garrett Kelly, and Joe Bath. After Chico tilted the scoreboard in their favor, the Heat and Bears each recorded two runs in the fourth inning, bringing the run tally to Chico 9, Yuba City 2.

After the Bears cut the Heat’s lead 9-3 in the top of the sixth, the Chico bats exploded once more while adding four runs to extend their lead 13-3. The Heat brought their total runs on the night to 14 after posting yet another run in the bottom of the seventh.

Despite the lopsided scoreboard, the Bears didn’t go quietly as they chipped away at the Heat’s dominance. The visitors collected two runs in the top of the seventh, one in the eighth, and three runs in the top of the ninth before finally surrendering to Chico’s Brandon Bachman.

With the 14-9 victory, the Heat move within one game of the second-place Lincoln Potters in current Great West League standings. The Heat will look to secure a series sweep of the Bears Sunday at Nettleton Stadium before hitting the road to face the first-place Medford Rogues.
