AUGUST 21, 2018 - CHICO, CA: The Chico Heat are proud to announce that Justin Sterner has been named the 2018 Great West League Pitcher Of The Year and Fred Ludwig has been named the Great West League Manager Of The Year. This is the second time the Ludwig has been named the GWL Manager Of The Year.
Sterner rode a 7-0 record and 3.02 ERA to his honor. The 6' 1", 200 pound Laguna Niguel, California product attends Brigham Young University. Sterner appeared in nine games, including eight starts for the champion Heat. In 38-2/3 innings, he fanned 68, walked only 16 hitters and allowed just 26 hits. Sterner gained the Pitcher of the Year award by barely edging out his teammate Blake Hannah.
Ludwig is the league's first two time winner of the Manager of the Year award. He previously won the award in 2016. Coach Ludwig led the Heat to a 43-14 regular season record. The 43 wins is a new league record, in three years of coaching the Heat he has a combined 115-59 record and two GWL championships. A former First Team Academic All American with Chico State Baseball, previously held the position of head baseball coach at Pleasant Valley High School where he earned a .729 winning percentage over a three year period. As a three-year baseball letterman at Chico State, Ludwig’s teammates elected him as their Team Captain 1991.
Cole Carder of the Medford Rouges was named the GWL Player Of The Year. Carder won the Player of the Year award in close voting, with four different players receiving first place votes.
