Heat Punctuate Regular Season with Three-Game Sweep Over Marysville
In a back-and-forth affair, the Heat ended the GWL regular season with an exclamation point after completing a three-game sweep of the Marysville Gold Sox. The finale, which drew 1,543 GWL baseball die-hards, concluded following the eighth inning due to city ordinances.
The Gold Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Heat starter Ryan Sanchez. The Heat answered back by posting two runs of their own in the bottom of the second courtesy of RBIs from Joe Bath and Mark Jones.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Heat and Gold Sox each scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, leading the squad to carry a 8-8 tie into the sixth inning. After the Gold Sox scored one run in the top of the sixth, the Heat claimed their first lead of the game as they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run off the bat of Garrett Kelly.
Clinging to a 10-9 lead, the Heat looked to gather insurance to secure the finale victory. A lead-off single from Mark Jones placed the Heat in a promising position before a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for the home squad. As if a two-run home run wasn’t enough, Garret Kelly delivered a bases-clearing triple to give the Heat a 13-9 edge. Carson McCusker then knocked in Kelly on a sacrifice fly to bring the Heat’s total runs to 14.
Despite their best efforts, the Gold Sox collected two runs in the top of the eighth before eventually surrendering to the Heat 14-11. The Heat’s Brian Coffey got the regular season’s final win after allowing only two hits and one run during his 1.2 innings pitched. At the plate, Garrett Kelly shone the brightest as he went three-for-five while racking up an impressive five RBIs.
The Heat will now embark on their second GWL postseason journey with the first round of playoffs kicking off Monday. As the number two seed, Chico will travel to Lincoln to face the Potters Monday night before the series shifts to Nettleton Stadium for games two and three (if necessary).
