Heat Drop Game 1 of Championship Series to Medford
1,303 Chico baseball fans gathered at Nettleton Stadium to see the Heat off as they opened game one of the 2017 GWL Championship Series against the Medford Rogues. The first of the three-game series marked the last game to be held at Nettleton Stadium this season before the series heads to Medford for the final two contests.
While the Heat looked to close out their home play with a win, Medford’s consistent offense production and shut-down pitching earned a 5-3 victory for the visitors.
Following five shutdown innings from Medford’s Jaiden France, the Heat jumped on the board after three wild pitches put runners in position for Cole Lemmel. Lemmel knocked in an RBI single just before Marcus Wilhite launched a bases-clearing triple to give the Heat a 3-2 lead.
However, the Heat found themselves in another hole just one inning later as a pair of wild pitches combined with a defensive error scored Medford’s second run of the inning to reclaim a 5-3 lead.
Despite the loss, the Heat put up seven hits to Medford’s eight, although contrast lies in the Heat’s three defensive errors to Medford’s one.
As for the Heat pitching staff, starter Lucas Knowles tossed a solid five innings while allowing two runs on five hits and fanning three. Reliever Sam Gamboa was tagged with the loss despite allowing only one walk and striking out four in his 2.2 innings pitched.
The Heat now head to Medford with the Rogues leading the series 1-0. As the series shifts to Medford, the Heat hope to see history repeat itself. Last season, the Heat dropped game one to the Rogues before traveling to Harry and David Field, where the Heat won games two and three to claim the GWL Championship trophy.
Game two is set for Saturday night in Medford with the first pitch scheduled at 6:35 p.m.
